What is the Most Accurate Infrared Thermometer?
First of all, you cannot use the infrared thermometers we have featured here to take the temperature of a person or animal. Please see the section “Can I Use an Infrared Thermometer to Take My Temperature?” to find out why.
Each product specifies the accuracy of the infrared thermometer. For the best accuracy, you should look for under + / – 2%. This is about the same as the thermometers that you may already use in your kitchen. Some laser thermometers will measure accuracy of up to + / – 1.5%. If accuracy is high on your list of priorities, look for these products.

What is the Best Infrared Thermometer for Cooking?
The best IR thermometer for cooking is going to be the most accurate one. However, again, you cannot use IR thermometers to measure interior temperatures, such as inside meat. They are, however, useful when you want to measure the temperature of things like boiling water and cooking oil. You can turn the gas mark or induction rating up or down on your hob to adjust for this temperature.
Another thing to look for when considering which infrared thermometer cooking aid you should get is how many laser points the thermometer has. You should make sure the one you choose to buy has as many laser points as possible – at least two. A couple of the products we listed in the buyer’s guide above have 12 laser points.
As each laser provides a reading, the more laser points the thermometer produces, the more accurate the reading will be. It becomes effortless to find the average temperature across the surface. Are Infrared Thermometers Accurate?

How Do I Choose an Infrared Thermometer?
There are several things to consider when you are choosing the right infrared thermometer for your personal use. They all fall under the simple category of “what will you use the thermometer for?”
From this stems a whole extra set of questions that you should ask yourself, including:
How accurate do you need the infrared digital thermometer to be? – For cooking, you will probably want a higher accuracy than for other things you might be using laser thermometers for.
What sort of temperature range do you need for what you are using this thermometer for? If it’s just cooking, then you are unlikely to need much above 500 or 600 degrees Fahrenheit. For use with automotive maintenance, you may be looking for a little more than this. If you are looking for a premium quality device that you can use for measuring temperatures in kilns and furnaces and so on, you will be looking for thermometers with a range much higher than that.
How far away from the material will you need to be when you are measuring the temperature? For some materials, you may need to be further away than others. With cooking you are unlikely to need to be more than a foot away in most situations. There will be some exceptions, of course – for example, when it comes to a large professional pizza oven. For mediums where you will need to further away when using IR thermometers, look for a higher distance to spot (D:S) ratio. What is the Distance to Spot Ratio?
This ratio is often abbreviated to the D:S ratio.
In this ratio, the “distance” is the measure of how far you are from the point you plan to measure. This point you are measuring is referred to as the “spot.”
The D:S ratio is how far away the thermometer is from the spot (distance) compared to the size of the spot itself. For example, with a D:S ratio of 12:1, such as the majority of the listed products above have, when you are 12 inches away from a medium (such as cooking oil, for example), the thermometer will measure a 1-inch wide “spot.”
It follows that as you get closer or further away (changing the distance), the size of the spot will also increase or decrease at the same rate.
IR thermometers with a higher D:S ratio, such as the BTMETER BT-1800 Pyrometer, which has a 50:1 D:S ratio, will measure a much smaller spot from the same distance as a 12:1 D:S ratio thermometer.
Can I Use an Infrared Thermometer to Take My Temperature?
You can’t take the temperature of a human or animal using the infrared thermometers we have listed above. All the ones we have selected are designed especially for use with either cooking or tools. There are several reasons for this:
First, you can’t just point the thermometer or temperature gun at someone to measure their internal body temperature. Common sense tells you this as well as anything else. To accurately record someone’s body temperature, you need to put a thermometer inside the body.
In most cases, the back of the mouth or the inner ear is sufficient for that. When you point a laser tape measure at someone’s skin, you will measure the temperature of their skin only. This has little relevance to whether or not someone truly has a fever or low internal body temperature.
Industrial IR thermometers are designed to take in a wide range of higher temperatures. They have a less accurate display, and the measurements themselves are also less accurate when compared to a proper medical thermometer. These thermometers are designed to take your temperature to a very precise increment.
They’re supposed to be incredibly precise between the range of about 30 – 45 degrees Celcius (86 – 113 degrees Fahrenheit), measuring in increments of 0.05 degrees C (0.09 degrees Fahrenheit). Outside of this range, these thermometers are not effective. The infrared thermometers that we have listed, however, are all precise to up to 1.5%, and most measure in increments of 0.2 degrees Fahrenheit.
Therefore, they are far less precise than the specific medical products you can buy. If you need to take someone’s temperature, we recommend purchasing a thermometer specially designed for this, rather than an industrial infrared temperature gun.
To get an accurate reading of the temperature of the substance you are measuring, you need to know the emissivity. This is covered in the “What is Adjustable Emissivity?” section. For substances like metal, oil, and water, emissivity can be easily set on the infrared thermometer to get the correct reading when you take the measurement.
However, even if you were to point the infrared thermometer into someone’s mouth to try to get precise temperature readings, you would have to take a guess at the emissivity. This means that essentially any values you get from this will be a complete guess.
In summary, then, it’s not a good idea to use an industrial infrared thermometer to take the temperature of a person or animal. This is because it’s impossible to get a truly precise temperature reading. The laser cannot measure internal body temperature or any temperature below the average skin surface temperature. Infrared thermometers are too imprecise, and despite these two things, you will still have to guess the emissivity of the inside of someone’s mouth. All in all, it would be a completely inaccurate guess and, therefore, not worth it.
It’s a much better idea to get a medical thermometer for this.
What is Adjustable Emissivity and How Do Infrared Thermometers Work?
Emissivity is all about the emission of energy radiation from a material.
Emissivity itself is a ratio of how much energy is radiated from an object’s surface, compared to how much is radiated from a perfect emitter of energy, known scientifically as a blackbody. It does just depend on the material involved, but also the type of surface. For example, if the surface is rough and coarse, it will have a high emissivity, whereas a smoother surface will have a lower emissivity.
Infrared thermometers work by picking up on how much thermal radiation is being emitted by a surface. By comparing this with the emissivity, the thermometer can work out the surface’s temperature.
Infrared thermometers have a feature called adjustable emissivity. This is so you can set the emissivity of the material you are taking the temperature of to the known value that has been pre-calculated. This value is always between 0.1 and 1.0.
What Do You Use Infrared Thermometers For?
You can use IR thermometers to take temperature readings for cooking and also to check the temperature of various materials.
